Tragic and Senseless Loss - Dexter Two :(

I can't even type this out so I am going to copy and paste the e-mail I sent to Dexter Two's previous owner. :o(

It is with sincere grief and disbelief that I have to tell you that Mr. Kitty / Dexter had to be put to sleep today. He became suddenly ill yesterday and we took him to our vet this morning. I had given him subcue fluids at home and forced Nutri-Cal and water on him to hopefully get him through the night. By the time my vet examined him today his ears, gums and eyes were yellow from liver failure. My vet did a blood panel on him and his red blood cells were almost completely dead. He wouldn't likely have made it through another night. The diagnosis was Cytauxzoonosis ... which is caused by ticks. I showed my vet his previous vet records and we saw where he had had lots of problems with ticks. One single dose of a flea / tick preventive is not sufficient if the cat stays outdoors all of the time. It has to be given every month. I flea-treated him and all of my cats as soon as I got him home because I knew he had been outdoors. Apparently he was already infected when I got him from you. It broke my heart to watch him suffer and be put to sleep ..... all because of ticks. :o( I only had one week with him, but I loved him already and at least I know he had one week in an air-conditioned home.

A special thank you to ML and KC for the lovely graphic for dear Dexter Two! Thank you to everyone who has posted such kind words of condolence. We are still in shock and expecting to see him waiting for his love and pets.

My heart aches for your loss, I do not know what else to say, except as you said, Dexter Two knew love and comfort in the very short time he was with you.

I find it very frustrating both as a veterinary technician and a conscientious breeder of Cornish Rex cats, that as much as I try to educate and help people, there are some that want to do things on the cheap, without truly caring about the animals that depend on them.

I commend you for caring for Dexter, trying your best to give him prompt veterinary care, and I am so sorry you lost him due to the lack of care and attention in his previous home.

I do not know Dexter Two's story, but I am saddened as if I just lost a close friend.

Heartfelt Hugs,
Teri

A senseless death is always so hard to comprehend, especially when it could have been prevented with such little cost and energy. I am a human being but there are times in my life when being human is embarrassing.

My sincere condolences on your heartfelt loss. Losing a life is always sad. Losing it when it could have been prevented is heartbreaking.

I am so very sorry that Dexter Two had to leave for the Rainbow Bridge so soon. At least he knew a really loving home for a week before he left. It is heartbreaking to have a kitty die because someone couldn't take just a little time to take care of him.

We are so sorry about Dexter 2.

Where we live even indoor only cats/dogs should be treated with flea & tick medicine as the beans can bring them in on their clothes. Daddy had to treat our yard they were so bad this year.

We wishes there was something we could say to take the pain of Dexter 2's loss away. We are glad he knew love if only for a short time.~S,S,C & F

awww Whimpurr, he knew so much love from you! We are so sorry that he had to go to the Bridge, but you will be reunited with him one day - he will be waiting there for you because you loved him and he loved you.

Rusty said...

I am an outdoor cat but I was always lucky that my Mom was very conscientious about keeping up on treating for fleas and ticks. What a horrible thing to happen, especially one that could have been prevented.

Dexter Two, I know you're at the bridge now, give my love to my bruther Grady. I know he's there waiting for me to join him one day.

Whimpurr, me and my Mom are so sorry you had to lose Dexter Two so senselessly.

I'm sorry to hear of Dexter Two's needless passing. In honor of him, I am going try to apply flea treatment to Max and Coal's mamacat, Little Girl. She's pretty feral, but she trusts me so hopefully it will work. I try to check her for ticks, but she doesn't let me pick her up. I do not want to lose her to this senseless disease. Thank you for giving Dexter Two a good home during his last week!

Shelly said...

Good news! Little Girl got her first dose of flea and tick treatment yesterday! I put it on her while she was eating so she didn't put up much of a fuss.
